Q: What gender is ‘Hanna?’

A: The world is a reminder that the shape of my body signals that I am female. How do you tell a stranger they are wrong to call you “miss” when the very assumption makes you feel like a fraud? Hello dysphoria, my old friend. My partner is a cis-heterosexual male and thus, the world sees a heterosexual couple but because of what I am, we drift outside of definition. A gray area that many don’t like to consider even exists. I embrace this, for we do not define each other but exist in shared space. That is what love is, it occupies those gray spaces in an unapologetic spectrum of color and form. And gender, like color, can only be felt not defined. Try and describe the color of your beloved’s eyes. The detail, the imperfections, the spectrum of shades, the soul beneath that lights them. Why define what is unique and beautiful when it exists perfectly outside explanation? To better understand my personal gender expression and how it relates to those nearest and dearest to me in a deeply gendered world, listen to my full interview HERE.
